「途中 Find your way out」,獲得2023年第10屆首獎。

As an integral experimentation based on the outdoor plaza of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), Program X-site launches an open call for projects of space to explore the spirit of publicness shaped by the temporary installations from multiple perspectives, such as architectural construction, contemporary art, environmental research and public participation, etc. The event encourages cross-disciplinary, diverse dialogues and participation of creation, and stimulates our re-imagination of the relationship with the non-specific plaza.

The 10th open call of Program X-site 2023 focuses on the creative projects of inter-disciplinary form, realized in the temporary proposals of architecture related to spatial and environmental experiments, which foregrounds the breakthroughs and practices in structural construction, media application and aesthetic expression. After two rounds of selection, the project Find Your Way Out, entitled after the team’s name, distinguishes itself as the laureate of the year. The team Find Your Way Out unites sound artist WANG Chung-Kun, French art group hellobastworkshop, space designer LIU Jia-Hao and device designer KUO Chung-Fu. With various experiences in dynamic art, sound or lighting devices, the team members embody a creative fusion of architecture and technology with contemporary art.

The team emphasizes that the virtual world takes advantage of the pandemic era, but the authentic sensations are less experienced and the organic ties between human beings are weakened. The minimalist square structure with a surface of moiré patterns creates a limited space where is underlined the team’s intention: returning to the body’s immediate sensations of trans-discipline, such as vision, audition and touch, etc. so as to alter the relationship between the visitors and the site. Meanwhile, the corporal experience restricted by the pandemic is reawakened by the work’s huge volume compared to its environment, color, material and dynamic interventions, including how the visitors walk, how their weights change the ground condition and the variation of sounds.

As for the winning project, the committee of review points out that the installation’s structural vocabulary to create heterogeneity by colors and materials not only responds appropriately to the surrounding environment and keeps a dialogue of high tension with the architectural volume of TFAM, but also captures the precise elements (sound, behavior and space) to strike a balance between sensational intervention of perception and rational structure of vision. “The work breaks away from the undefinable state of the distance between human bodies. By two towering giant walls with a passage running through, the installation represents an attitude in response to the unknown and the uncertain during the pandemic: each uncertainty depends on the chain effect of our steps, just like seesaw movements; the only passage stands for the determined attitude in the face of the pandemic, leading us to find an exit from the predicament.”

Exploiting the trend of “global village” rising from the end of the last century, the Covid-19 assaults everyone, regardless of nationality and hierarchy, and ties up the fate of all mankind in a more direct, powerful and comprehensive manner. So far, social distancing in response to “pandemic prevention” has repeatedly become the highest principle of life. We are trapped, while fighting against the virus infinitely mutating, in the rolling wave planning: the “post-pandemic era” now will turn into the “long-Covid symptoms” the next moment. Both seem to be the alternatives at the two ends of the spectrum of the dilemma, and neither is the ultimate solution. At the moment, we see no light at the end of the pandemic’s tunnel. Dawn and dart night alternate, emerging like phantoms, and life is floating at the critical point–between (re)openings and restrictions in coexistence with the virus. Either alone or with companies, we go on the road ahead long and difficult, during which the body is still the only bargaining chip in the games to come.

In response to the proposition of body perception of our time, Find Your Way Out is a black giant building in the spirit of minimalism on the outdoor plaza in front of the TFAM entrance: with a height of 8 meters reaching toward the sky and a narrow corridor of merely 2 meters traveling through a maximum length of 30 meters. Each visitor is invited to walk upon the installation: each step and weight will affect the rhythm and scale of the ground, like a soft undulation, breathing, floating and varying. As an alternative single path to the TMAF square, the visitors walk either alone or against the shoulders of others; except the shadow and light that seize the opportunity to penetrate the installation, and some casual company of others, nothing but him/herself and, while looking up, a ray of sky are distinctly visible.

Bodily movements, arrivals and departures of others: each influences the rise and fall of the ground as well as the horizon of vision. What’s striking the ears is the mighty noise like waves flowing from the ground, which is actually a harmonious echo of Find Your Way Out to the experience of each participant. Pressing against a body’s two flanks, the black mesh is flicking as the sight wanders, and so is the square’s landscape, like a “splash screen” difficult to be characterized beyond the mesh, which serves metaphorically as multiple alternatives mixed with avatars and social distancing rules between human beings and the world outside. Those on the journey of Find Your Way Out either travel forward, linger, or repeatedly pace back and forth along the only path of one’s own, and only those with a firm attitude find the way out to come back again to daily life–crystal clear, measurable, and yet full of uncertainties.
