sound.of.suitcase – noiseBox | 開箱作業系列 – 噪聲機

此作參考了兩種機械裝置,一是愛迪生發明的留聲機,留聲機紀錄聲音的來源來自細針刻畫在蠟桶上的深淺,再經由唱針將聲音重現。噪聲機則反轉了這樣的機制,以不同齒數的齒輪取代蠟桶機制,透過隨機來回移動的唱針,播放出不成曲調的噪訊。另一種機械裝置則是參考了在網路上相當出名的「最無用機械」(The Most Useless Machine),採用一個開關機制,當播動開關開啟箱子後,隨即又會有支機械小手將開關關上並闔上箱蓋。此作即利用此機制,作為一段隨機作曲演出的開始,開關打開、展開箱蓋、開始演奏最後結束之時,伸出機械手將開關關閉,隨即關閉箱蓋結束演出。

This piece‭ ‬was‭ ‬inspired‭ ‬by‭ ‬two devices‭, ‬one of which is the phonogram invented by Thomas Edison‭.‬‭ ‬In order to‭ ‬produce sounds on a phonograph‭,‬‭ ‬spiral grooves are engraved on a wax cylinder to‭ ‬record‭. ‬Then a‭ ‬playback stylus is used to trace the engravings to reproduce the sounds‭. ‬noiseBox‭ ‬replaces the process of the wax cylinder with gears‭ ‬with‭ ‬different numbers of teeth‭. ‬Tuneless noise is created when‭ ‬the‭ ‬stylus‭ ‬shifts back and forth‭.‬
The other‭ ‬inspiration‭ ‬was‭ ‬the‭ ‬renowned‭ ‬“Most Useless‭ ‬Machine”.‭ ‬Driven by an‭ ‬on/off switch‭, ‬this box with a lid turns itself off with a lever‭ ‬contained inside‭, ‬once it has been‭ ‬switched‭ ‬on‭.‬‭ ‬noiseBox‭ ‬applies‭ ‬the same‭ ‬mechanism‭: ‬turn the switch on‭, ‬the‭ ‬case opens and‭ ‬the performance starts‭. ‬As the performance ends‭, ‬the switch is mechanically turned off and the lid shuts down‭ ‬again.

此作在箱體的三個面上各有一扇可經由觀眾靠近而開啟的窗,並冒出是自我敲打的木魚,以半拍和一拍的速度隨機敲奏。藏匿於箱匣的驚喜,即透過觀者在不同面向的觸發,三隻木魚隨之起舞。

Inside the three doors on the sides of the case‭ ‬are‭ ‬three‭ ‬self‭-‬beating wood fish‭. ‬As‭ ‬viewers‭ ‬approach‭ ‬different sides‭, ‬the‭ ‬little‭ ‬wood fish pop out the doors‭ ‬as‭ ‬surprises‭ ‬and perform at half beat or whole beat‭ ‬randomly‭.‬

音樂盒的機械結構,透過Seqence的方式相當常見,此作即應用了此原理,將八個按鈕排列成十六個拍子,透過轉輪機制,透過按鈕開關的操作,觸發內藏於裝置中的樂音。樂音的選擇放入了藍調音階,並且使用旋鈕來改變音域的高低位置。

The music box sequencer is a commonly seen structure‭. ‬Seq#01‭ ‬follows the principle of the music box sequencer to create16‭ ‬beats‭, ‬each formed by a row of eight buttons‭. ‬By pressing the buttons‭, ‬Blues scale notes are produced‭, ‬while a knob is used‭ ‬to change the pitch‭.‬

此作品為「空.器」第2版,延續探討人的聲音知覺,除了用耳朵聆聽之外,是否還有其他可能?

聲音的產生來自震動,聲音的傳遞則必須經由特定的介質,「空氣」即是人類聽見聲響最主要的媒介。但我們可以在日常生活的許多經驗中發現,聲響的感受不只可以經由聽覺,如沙石車轟隆經過時的地板震動,如演唱會現場低頻音浪吹拂,全身都可以成為聲音傳遞的媒介。

「空.器 #2」即是放大此類經驗感受,利用十二個垂直排列的電磁氣閥作為吹氣與發聲的機關,經過紅外線測距感測器的物體因遠近不同的距離可觸發並改變十二個氣閥的發聲節奏。直接使用空氣作為一種相較於聲音更有質量的感觸,給與親近的觀眾一種輕拂且幽默的攻擊。

This device is the second version of “Kong.Qi”, which is created to find other possible ways to discuss the human’s sense toward sound apart from hearing.

Sound is produced from vibration, and is transmits through specific mediums, ‘air’ is the premier medium to human’s hearing, but, from daily life experience, we are able to find out we are able to sense the sound not only from hearing, when experiencing the ground shaking caused from a passing by heavy truck, as well the low frequency sound produced in the concert, our body can also be a medium to sound.

“Kong.Qi #2” is exactly designed to increase this sort of sense, there are twelve electromagnetic valves arranged vertically, which are used to sense blowing and voicing, through the infrared-rays sensor, twelve valves can change the tempo of voicing. The idea is to use the air to produce a direct sense of feeling that is stronger than what the sound can offer along, and to give the audients a sort of smooth yet humour attack.

【空.器】,持續以往現場演出的樂器製造,轉而在空間場域的不同,而單獨以裝置的方式呈現,演出交由觀者發動,在一切透過電腦程式化的內容,接續著數段隨機挑選的節奏拼貼。
晶瑩透明的裝置,可一窺所有的機械結構,氣壓缸推送敲打著兩支長短不一的砲管,聲音的產生亦來自於此,所有的過程即透明化在觀看與聆聽之間。

此作的概念來自於吹瓶聲。光一個瓶子就能擁有豐富的泛音,因為可以透過水位去改變聲音頻率、氣流大小,再加上吹嘴的前後搖擺,都可以改變泛音位置。兩個瓶子一起運用則可以製造音頻的撞擊。節奏則來自控制氣流的開關――電磁氣閥――經由電腦透過Arduino送出0與1的訊號,控制交流電氣閥的開關(相同的原理亦可用在任何交流電氣的開關上)。在物理的聲響製造當中,同時穿插電腦數位的即時採樣,反覆堆疊出一種全新的奇異聲場。

The ideas of creating the Sound of Bottles came from the sounds made by bottles when air is blown into them. A simple bottle has rich overtones whose frequencies can be changed through alteration of water levels, air flow or back-and-forth movement. With two bottles, the interference of the audio frequencies creates more effects. Electromagnetic gas valves control the tempos through the signals of 0 and 1 sent by an Arduino microcontroller board (the same principle is applied to the switches of appliances using alternating currents). Together with some other sounds recorded by digital tools in real-time, the bottles produce peculiar sound effects.

機械給人冰冷之感,在作者眼中發現到機械也是擁有其自身生命,藉由多材質的選擇搭配,得以相容互補「冷熱比」;如同在創造一個全新的生命體。聲音的運用上,也是目前作者探討的意像,或許聲音之於觀者,是種暴力侵入的、不得不接受的感知方式,但是從另一個角度去思考,不正是意味作品其存在的價值嗎!聲音的介入,增添了作品的可能性。希望達到某種「頓悟」,再進一步的探討生命價值之所在。
